A common misconception is that a person with a suspended license, because he or she is not legally allowed to drive, cannot obtain car insurance. This is simply false. If you have had your license suspended, for whatever reason, it is important to know that you can acquire and maintain car insurance regardless of the suspension.

One of the most common reasons behind license suspensions in the U.S. is driving without valid or sufficient car insurance. The insurance companies know this and, overall, are sensitive to your situation and are happy to help. Every state has different laws, and each car insurance provider has different guidelines for how to deal with a suspended license.

Not all car insurance companies will provide coverage to a driver with a suspended license, but many will. In some cases, insurance will be granted under certain conditions, such as requiring that you show proof of a valid license within a set period of time—often 30-60 days—to prevent cancellation. Other car insurance companies are willing to grant coverage with no conditions at all and will cover you while your license is suspended and after you get it reinstated.

It is important to note, however, that buying insurance will usually have no effect on the fines you may have to pay for driving without insurance but will usually allow you to regain your driving privileges. Also, as per normal car insurance procedure, your rates will often increase as a result of getting a ticket; however, these increases are often minimal. Remember to always obey all laws of the road, and be sure to carry a valid driver’s license along with current and sufficient auto insurance before hitting the road.

If you are looking for a place to purchase car insurance and your license is suspended, try Western United. They are a company under AAA and have all the benefits of AAA, but allow coverage for those with no so perfect driving records. I have a suspended license from a DUI and got my insurance through this company and was very pleased with the service. I would recommend calling them for a quote. They can also assist in filing an SR-22 with the DMV if you need that too. Hope this helps someone looking for information!
