Maneuverability Test Tips

Not many states require passing a maneuverability test for obtaining a driver license. But if you do live in a state, like Ohio, that mandates this exam, in addition to a drivers license test, you'll need to practice.

Your best bet is to contact driver training classes in your area and inquire if they offer practice maneuverability tests. If yes, consider enrolling. You'll receive guidance from an expert instructor on a course similar, if not identical, to the actual exam.

If you don't have the time for a driver ed course you'll have to devise your own practice tests. Course test diagrams are available online. You can easily recreate a test course in a nearby parking lot using cones, boxes, folding chairs or anything that's about two feet tall, stationary and won't cause damage to your car if bumped. After setting up a course, practice, practice and practice. Pay special attention to getting comfortable with using your side and rearview mirrors.

Also, make sure the vehicle that you take to the exam is in good working condition. This includes making sure the front passenger seat, where the test examiner will sit, is free of CD cases and empty of water bottle containers. Check with your DMV on what you're required to bring to the maneuverability test. Depending on your state you may be asked to provide proof of insurance, registration, your drivers permit and driver ed certificate. And be certain that you're accompanied to the driving test by another person who owns a valid drivers license.
