What is the best way to avoid hitting a deer?
Defensive Driving in Deer Country
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration deer collisions cause over 1 billion dollars in car damage annually. So if you're driving in an area with active wildlife, here are some some driver safety tips on how to avoid a car accident with a deer:- Be especially aware during dusk and dawn. This is when deer are most active. Also, exercise more caution during October and November. More deer-car collisions occur during these two months than any other time of year.
- Use your car horn if you see deer, regardless if they're near the road or not. This will help other drivers entering the area after you avoid a deer collision.
- Brake when you see a deer on the side of the road. Instead of fleeing for the nearby cover of a field or forest, it may instead, without warning, sprint into the direction of your vehicle. Deer movements are highly unpredictable. Don't lock the brakes, or you'll risk losing control of your vehicle and causing a car crash.
- Even if you pass a deer, slow down. Deer generally travel in herds. If you see one, there are sure to be more in the general area.
- Slow down when you see deer crossing signs. These signs aren't randomly posted. They're placed in areas known for harboring large deer populations.
- Drive with high beams when there's no oncoming traffic.
In addition to these safety tips, as the ultimate act of driver safety, always wear a seat belt.
