Smog and Exhaust

This is a difficult law to pinpoint. Unlike most vehicle regulations, "loudness" is not governed on a state level, but rather by municipality. For help in this matter, contact your local police department or your DMV.

Tickets for loud exhaust systems are normally not based on decibel level, but rather on emissions and smog. Modifying an exhaust system by removing a muffler or catalytic converter will alter your vehicle's ability to curb emissions. And if you live in an area that requires emissions testing, your modified vehicle will not pass inspection. And if you can't pass a smog check you, depending on your state, will not be allowed to apply for vehicle registration and/or registration renewal. And without vehicle registration, your vehicle will not be road-legal.
