Statutes and Traffic Laws

To find your state's vehicle code, here's what to do:

  1. Conduct an Internet search typing in your state followed by the word "statutes." For example: "New Mexico Statutes" or "South Carolina Statutes. You'll then be directed to your state's legislative landing page.
  2. Each landing page is designed differently. Titles may be listed numerically. If so, scroll down the list until you find "Motor Vehicle." Click "Motor Vehicle." It will open to a page listing every DMV-related category. If titles are not listed, type "Motor Vehicle" in the page's search box. It should direct you to the information you're seeking.

Knowing how to access your state's statutes is a valuable resource tool to possess. It will allow you to find information on any motor vehicle topic, regardless of how arcane. You can find information on safety laws, drivers license suspensions, salvage titles, boating registration, driver license renewals, vehicle records,  DUI penalties and much more.
