Register for a Motorcycle License Plate

The method to getting a California motorcycle license plate is the same as applying for regular license plates. First you must register the bike.

To do so:

  1. Make an appointment at a DMV office. Don't worry about a smog check; they aren't necessary for motorcycles.
  2. Fill out the Application for Title and Registration.
  3. Bring in proof of insurance and the title (unless it’s with a lienholder).
  4. Pay the necessary fees (there’s a calculator on the DMV Web site; CA fees are complex). Expect to pay less for older bikes and more for newer.
  5. In the mail, you will receive one license plate to display on your motorcycle.

Want Vanity Plates?

If you want to get specialized or vanity plates, fill out the Special License Plate Application from the DMV Web site and choose the plate you want. This carries additional fees.
