What are the age requirements to be a CDL driver in California? California
Getting a Commercial License
To get a California CDL, you must meet one of the following age requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old for in-state, nonhazardous materials only.
- Be at least 21 years old for interstate and hazardous materials.
In addition, there are specific state and federal requirements you must meet.
Choosing Your CDL Class
The type of test you take varies by the CDL vehicle class you’ll be driving. Decide which CDL class you need before you apply to take the test. These class guidelines are set by the federal government.
- Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GWVR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds, including any under Class B and C.
- Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR, including any under Class C.
- Class C: A Class C vehicle that carries hazardous materials; or, with endorsements, a 15-passenger van (only needed if you drive one as your job, not for personal use).
Passing the CDL Test
Once you decide on your class, the next thing you’ll have to do to become a CDL driver is pass a test administered by the DMV.
The DMV Web site provides a handbook to study, but taking a CDL practice test is essential, too. Several companies on the web now offer CDL practice tests that are just like the real test. These allow you to judge if you’re ready to pass the CA commercial test, or if you need more studying.
