How do I renew a TX CDL? Texas
The process for renewing a Texas CDL is slightly more difficult than renewing a regular drivers license, so it's helpful to plan ahead for license renewal. A Texas CDL is valid for six years and costs $60. There is no grace period for driving beyond your license's expiration date.
Commercial License Renewal
Unfortunately, state law requires that all CDL transactions be completed in person at a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) drivers license office. Regardless of your CDL class, you can't renew your CDL online or by mail due to concerns about the potential for identity theft and license fraud.
As with a standard
If you required a limb or vision waiver to get your original commercial license, you will need to have these documents completed again before your license will be renewed. You can request the limb or vision waiver packet at any drivers license office.
Expired TX CDL
If you previously held a TX CDL and allowed it to expire, you will need to complete both the written exam and the road CDL test in order to be issued a new license.
All requirements for any desired CDL driver endorsements, including the hazardous materials endorsement, will need to be completed again as well. This means you'll need to get in some CDL practice beforehand. You can find a CDL practice test for the written exam in the TX DPS commercial driver handbook.
