Most states post their towing laws online, and usually that information is on the state’s motor vehicle agency’s Web site or other official government site.

California, for example, includes information about state towing laws on its DMV Web site. Similarly, Michigan’s official state Web site provides a document of towing laws gathered from the state’s Motor Vehicle Code and Complied Laws.

Of course, there are plenty of unofficial Web sites that provide each state’s towing information. You can check these sites, too, but it’s always safest to double-check with your state’s motor vehicle agency to make sure you get the most up-to-date towing rules and regulations.

Remember: States enforce towing laws to help keep people and property safe. In addition to laws related to proper height, weight, and length, find out other towing rules and regulations – such as those regarding acceptable coupling options (balls, sockets, pins, swivels, etc.), hitch adjustments, lights and reflectors, and passengers – to make sure you’re towing safely and legally.
