For starters, you must be at least 18 years old to apply for your Florida commercial license.

If you meet that requirement, get ready for a series of testing that will, if you pass them all, ultimately lead to you becoming a full-fledged CDL driver.

CDL Required Identification

Let's get the paperwork and money out of the way first. Be sure to bring the following with you to the driver's license office:

  • Proof of identity (such as your current license).
  • Proof of Social Security number (such as your card).
  • Proof of address (two documents needed, such as a utility bill, title, registration, or insurance card).
  • Proof of legal presence.
  • Payment for the $75 license fee (additional charges may apply).

CDL Medical Tests

Driving a truck brings extra responsibility, so you must undergo medical testing to help ensure you're physically capable of safely handling your duties. Bring the completed and signed medical examination report (issued by a licensed doctor) with you to the driver's license office.

Of course, you'll also have to pass a vision screening.

CDL Written Tests

You'll need to pass at least a general written knowledge test.

Depending on which CDL class you're seeking, you may need to pass another written CDL test or two. Plus, if you want to obtain any endorsements, you'll have to pass even more written tests. All written testing is performed at the driver's license office.

You can make appointments for both the CDL written and skills test online via FL OASIS. You don't need an appointment for the written tests, but you will need one for the road tests.

There's no fee for the initial written testing, but if you fail and have to take it again you must pay $10.

TIP: To avoid that fee and help make sure you pass your test on the first try, it's best to gain some CDL practice. Consider studying the FL CDL handbook and taking a CDL practice test.

CDL Skills Tests

After passing the written tests, you'll be eligible to take the skills tests. Again, the exact tests given depend on which class of license you're seeking. The testing is performed at skill sites or at Florida-approved third-party sites.

There's no fee for the initial skills testing, but if you fail and have to take it again you must pay $20.
