In the state of Georgia, all drivers operating a single vehicle or a combination of vehicles exceeding 26,001 pounds must obtain a commercial license (CDL). The first step to obtaining a CDL is to apply for a CDL learners permit.

CDL Drivers Permit

Prior to applying for a CDL permit, become familiar with the GA Commercial Driver’s Manual. Once you feel comfortable with all the information contained in the manual, submit the following to a CDL Examination Station:

  • Completed application for a CDL permit.
  • $35 application fee.
  • $10 drivers permit fee.

Drivers Permit Test

The GA Department of Driver Services (DDS) does not require you take a learners permit test, you will have to pass the written knowledge test, and the driving road skills test, in order to obtain your CDL. In preparation for the CDL test, consider participating in a CDL training course for practical CDL practice, and taking a CDL practice test online.

CDL Driver Classes

Depending on the type of commercial vehicle you will be driving, your CDL license will be classified as one of the following:

  • Class A, for drivers operating a combination of vehicles exceeding 26,001 pounds, to include 10,000 pounds or more in towed vehicles.
  • Class B, for drivers operating a single vehicle exceeding 26,001 pounds.
  • Class C, for drivers operating a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or a vehicle that is transporting hazardous materials.
You can find detailed information regarding each CDL class and possible exemptions online.
