In the state of Georgia, you must obtain a commercial license (CDL) in order to legally operate a vehicle or combination of vehicles exceeding 26,001 pounds.

In order to obtain a particular CDL class license, you must pass a written CDL test and a driving road skills test.

In preparation for the tests, become familiar with the CDL handbook, and consider attending a CDL driver training course for CDL practice.  You can also take a CDL practice test online.

CDL Endorsements

Certain commercial vehicles require special endorsements to legally operate. These vehicles include:

  • Tank vehicles (endorsement N)
  • Passenger vehicles (endorsement P)
  • Hazardous material transport vehicles (endorsement H)
  • School buses (endorsement S)
  • Double/triple trailers (endorsement T)
In order to obtain an endorsement for your GA CDL, you must pass an additional, endorsement-specific written knowledge test. For passenger vehicles, including school buses, you must pass an additional driving road skills test, also.

The HAZMAT Endorsement

According to the U.S. Patriot Act, drivers of hazardous materials must pass a criminal background check. In order to apply for a background check, you must submit the following to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA):

  • Current CDL number, or permit number.
  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of legal residency in the U.S.
  • $34 TSA background check fee.
  • $17.25 FBI background check fee.
  • $38 fingerprint fee.
The background check is typically completed within 30 days. Persons convicted of terrorism, treason, espionage, theft, and particularly violent crimes will be disqualified. The TSA website provides a complete list of TSA locations.
