In order to apply for a commercial license (CDL) in the state of Georgia, you must be at least 18 years of age, pass a written CDL test, and a driving road skills test. The fee for a CDL is $45.

CDL Driver Defined

CDL class licenses are required for all drivers operating vehicles exceeding 26,001 pounds, transporting 15 passengers or more, or hazardous materials transport vehicles. In order to transport hazardous materials, you must obtain a HAZMAT endorsement for you CDL.

Applying for a HAZMAT CDL

In order to obtain a HAZMAT endorsement, the Department of Driver Services (DDS) requires a criminal background check. The Transportation Security Administration conducts all background checks. You can apply for a background check by submitting following in person at a local TSA branch:
 
  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of legal presence in the U.S.
  • Your current CDL number, or CDL permit number.
  • $34 TSA background check fee.
  • $17.25 FBI background check fee.
  • $38 fingerprint fee.
HAZMAT endorsements must be renewed every five years. At the time of renewal, the background check must be repeated. Persons convicted of the following crimes will be denied a HAZMAT endorsement:
 
  • Terrorism.
  • Treason.
  • Immigration violations.
  • Smuggling.
  • Espionage.
  • Sedition.
  • Murder.
  • Assault with intent to murder.
  • Kidnapping.
  • Extortion.
  • Arson.
  • Theft.
  • Bribery.
  • Sexual assault.
  • Racketeering violations.
  • Unlawful possession or distribution of weapons, such as firearms and explosive devices.
  • Unlawful possession and distribution of a controlled substance.
  • Fraud, including identity fraud.
  • Improper use or transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Intent or conspiracy to commit any of the above crimes.

HAZMAT Test
