In the state of Georgia, all commercial drivers transporting hazardous materials must obtain a HAZMAT endorsement for their commercial license (CDL). In order to obtain or renew a HAZMAT endorsement, the Department of Driver Services (DDS) requires a criminal background check.

Background Check for Hazmat CDL

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) conducts all background checks. You must apply for a background check within 30 days of your CDL expiration date. In order to apply, you must submit the following to a local TSA branch:

  • Your current CDL number.
  • Secondary proof of identity.
  • Proof of legal presence in the U.S.
  • $38 fingerprint fee.
  • $34 TSA background check fee.
  • $17.25 FBI background check fee.
HAZMAT endorsements must be renewed every five years. Persons convicted of the following crimes will be denied renewal:

  • Extortion.
  • Kidnapping.
  • Smuggling.
  • Espionage.
  • Terrorism.
  • Treason.
  • Arson.
  • Sedition.
  • Murder.
  • Assault with intent to murder.
  • Theft.
  • Bribery.
  • Sexual assault.
  • Racketeering violations.
  • Fraud.
  • Controlled substance violations.
  • Unlawful possession of firearms, explosive devices, and other weapons.
  • Improper transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Conspiracy or intent to commit one of the above violations.

CDL Test

If you have allowed your CDL class license to expire, you will have to repeat the written the written HAZMAT test, in addition to the CDL test. In preparation for the CDL tests, become familiar with the CDL Drivers Manual. In addition, taking a CDL driver training course will give you on the road CDL practice.
