Transferring Personalized Plates, Vanity Plates, and More

Yes, the New York DMV will allow you to transfer your license plates to another vehicle, provided it's in your name; however, you must be certain of notifying the DMV and, if applicable, the car dealership (auto dealerships handle and submit registration papers).

You will be required to pay a $10 registration transfer fee, as well as a title fee, sales tax and, if applicable, a pro-rated registration fee if the new vehicle weighs more than the previous vehicle. This will not, however, renew the registration. The original license plate expiration date will remain.

If you plan on transferring the registration at a later date, you'll need to surrender the license plates to the DMV. When you do so, request a transfer receipt - NOT a a refund receipt. And, to avoid running afoul with the law, wait to cancel the vehicle's car insurance until AFTER you surrender the plates.

When you're ready to register, visit any DMV office with:

  • Your transfer receipt.
  • Proof of ownership.
  • A completed Vehicle Registration/Title Application (Form MV-82).
  • Proof of sales tax payment, sales tax exemption or purchase price.
  • Proof of identity and date of birth.
  • A NY State Insurance Identification Card (FS-20).
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card to pay all applicable fees.

Upon completion, you'll receive new license plates, but the original registration expiration date will remain the same.
