Obtaining a Motorcycle License Plate

Obtaining a license plate for a motorcycle is no different than obtaining license plates for a car. Here's what you need to bring to your local NY DMV office:

  • Proof of ownership.
  • Proof of New York sales tax payment, exemption or purchase price.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • Proof of identity and date of birth.
  • A completed Vehicle Registration/Title Application (Form MV-82).
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card to pay all applicable fees.

In addition, your motorcycle must pass an annual inspection at any DMV-approved inspection center. After registering for the first time, you have 10 days to take your motorcycle in for an inspection.

TIP: Like other kinds of vehicles, motorcycles can have special or customized license plates, too.
