CDL Age Requirements

You cannot apply for a New York commercial license (CDL) unless you meet the following age requirements:

  • Class A (HAZMAT): 21 years old
  • Class B and C: 18 years old

Additional CDL Driver Requirements

Age is just one of several requirements you must meet. Depending on your CDL class, you must also:

  • Be a New York resident.
  • Be able to read and speak English.
  • Pass a medical examination.
  • Pass a background check (mandatory for HAZMAT endorsement).

And, of course, you must pass all required CDL tests; but, before focusing on a CDL test, you should focus on CDL practice. This means enrolling in a CDL training class and taking a CDL practice test. The more you practice, the better your chances of passing the actual exams and earning your commercial license.

For exact CDL requirements and procedures, visit the NY DMV and download the state's CDL manual.
