How do I apply for a CDL in New York? New York
Applying for Your NY CDL
Assuming you already have your CDL permit (you'll need this before you can get your full commercial license), the first step to applying for your CDL is to pay the $40 fee. You can do this online, in person, or by calling (518) 402-2100. If you pay at a DMV office, you'll receive a receipt. (You'll need the receipt number to schedule a CDL test appointment online or by phone.)Then, once you think you're ready to pass a CDL test (road test), make an appointment with the NY DMV. When scheduling your CDL driver test, be sure you can make the test. If you need to cancel, you must notify the DMV at least 72 hours prior to the test date. If not, you'll be required to pay another $40 commercial license test fee.
For information on what to expect at the test, read New York's CDL manual. It's always wise to get some more CDL practice and maybe take another CDL practice test or two beforehand.
On the day of the exam be sure to bring:
- Your driver's license.
- Your CDL permit.
NOTE: The vehicle you arrive in must match the CDL class you're pursuing. In other words, don't arrive in a school bus if you're testing for a HAZMAT endorsement.
The exam consists of three parts:- Pre-trip vehicle inspection
- Basic vehicle control
- On-road test
If you pass, you must wait at least seven days before taking your drivers license to the DMV to have it changed to a CDL. Federal regulations require that New York officials must check your status with the National Driver Register (NDR) and Commercial Driver License Information System (CDLIS) before you can be issued a CDL.
