How do I apply for a Hazmat endorsement in New York? New York
Obtaining Your NY HAZMAT Endorsement
First, you have a New York commercial license to apply for a hazardous materials endorsement. If you meet this qualification, you'll next need to study for a HAZMAT exam. All the information you'll need for this CDL test is contained in New York's CDL manual, including ideas for obtaining CDL practice. You can find a free copy at any DMV office or download one from the DMV's Web site.
It doesn't matter how long you've been a CDL driver or what CDL class you have; after studying, you should take a CDL practice test or two. You can find these online from a long list of sites. If you think you're ready for the HAZMAT test, visit any DMV office and pay a $5 exam fee. If you fail, you can take as many tests as needed to pass. You'll be charged $5 for each test.
If you pass, you're ready for the background check. You then must:
- Complete an Application for Hazardous Materials Endorsement (Form HAZ-44).
- Visit any DMV office with your CDL license, Form HAZ-44, and cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express) to pay the $140.75 background check fee.
- After paying the background check fee, you'll receive an FS-6T receipt. Do not lose this. You will need to present this receipt during fingerprinting. If the DMV office you apply at does not take fingerprints, you'll need to visit a state police office to have this done. For a list of state police offices download Form SP-1 from the NY DMV's Web site. Don't visit a New York state police office not on this list. Your fingerprints will be recorded digitally.
If you don't hear from the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA), you're in, as it were. The TSA will only contact you if you fail your background check. If this occurs, the NY DMV will follow up with a letter explaining why you failed.
If you pass, the DMV will mail you a photo HAZMAT CDL containing your HAZMAT endorsement.
