How do I obtain a NC motorcycle license plate? North Carolina
Motorcycle License Plate
If you have not yet titled your motorcycle in your name, you must do this first, or at the same time as you register your bike.
If you already have a motorcycle registered in your name, but don’t have license plates for it, or if it’s not registered:
- Have the motorcycle safety inspected.
- Go to your nearest Vehicle & License Plate DMV office. You may call for an appointment.
- Bring in your title or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- Pay $28 for the registration fee, plus a Regional Transportation Authority Registration Tax of $5 for these NC counties only: Wake, Durham, and Orange.
- Show proof of insurance.
NOTE: Motorcycles and cars get one license plate in North Carolina.
