Renewing Your NC CDL

At the end of five or eight years (see below), your CDL will expire, no matter what endorsement or CDL class you have. You must reapply for a new commercial license and new endorsements.

To renew your CDL, make an appointment at a DMV licensing office. The examiner there will let you know what to bring in and which tests you need to take.

However, know that reapplying for a CDL entails retaking the written CDL test, so remember to get some CDL practice first. It's probably been a while since you reviewed the Commercial Drivers Handbook, so do that and purchase a CDL practice test from one of the drivers ed websites that provide these NC tests.

Why? Because the NC DMV doesn’t have free tests, and that way you can tell if you’ll fail your test or if you will pass. These tests cost between $10 and $15, and most sites will let you take a short free test to see if you want to shell out money for a longer exam.

CDL Renewal Fees

North Carolina actually has you pay $3 for your CDL driver endorsement per year, but you pay in advance so it makes the fees seem higher.

Thus, your CDL will expire:

  • Every eight years, if you’re 18-53. If you have one endorsement, you pay $24, plus your regular CDL fees.
  • Every five years, if you're 54 or older, and you'll pay $15 for one endorsement.
NOTE: If you have more than one endorsement, it’s $3 per year per endorsement.
