How do I obtain a IL motorcycle license plate? Illinois
Motorcycles and License Plates
You must register your motorcycle in order to obtain a motorcycle license plate. The process is easy; you'll need to:- Complete an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD-190). You can't download this form. You must pick one up at any Secretary of State (SOS) office, or have one sent to you by calling (800) 252-8980.
- Find your proof of insurance.
- Find your proof of ownership. Make sure, if you have a signed-over title, that the motorcycle's odometer reading is certified on the Assignment of Title, and includes the date of sale. Also double-check that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the title matches the VIN on the motorcycle.
- Complete Tax Form RUT-25 if you purchased the motorcycle from a dealer, or Tax Form RUT-50 if you purchased from a private individual. Write a check for sales tax, if applicable, payable to the "Illinois Department of Revenue."
- Write a check to cover motorcycle registration and title fees, payable to the "Illinois Secretary of State." See below for exact fees.
