Motorcycles and License Plates

You must register your motorcycle in order to obtain a motorcycle license plate. The process is easy; you'll need to:
  1. Complete an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD-190). You can't download this form. You must pick one up at any Secretary of State (SOS) office, or have one sent to you by calling (800) 252-8980.
  2. Find your proof of insurance.
  3. Find your proof of ownership. Make sure, if you have a signed-over title, that the motorcycle's odometer reading is certified on the Assignment of Title, and includes the date of sale. Also double-check that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the title matches the VIN on the motorcycle.
  4. Complete Tax Form RUT-25 if you purchased the motorcycle from a dealer, or Tax Form RUT-50 if you purchased from a private individual. Write a check for sales tax, if applicable, payable to the "Illinois Department of Revenue."
  5. Write a check to cover motorcycle registration and title fees, payable to the "Illinois Secretary of State." See below for exact fees.
Then, drop off the documents and payments at any SOS office. Or, if you prefer, mail everything to:

Secretary of State
Vehicle Services Department
501 S. Second St., Room 014
Springfield, IL 62756

Motorcycle license plates are issued based on two piston displacement categories: 150 cc and above or fewer than 150 cc. The plates are different in color and characters. The plate for a motorcycle classified as "fewer than 150 cc" is distinguished by a letter preceding the license plate number. Regardless of license plate, a motorcycle registration sticker must be affixed to the plate's upper right corner.
