That depends on how you define "a lot". But, to most people, yes, speeding ticket fines are expensive.

Of course, speeding ticket costs vary according to the violation. If you're caught going a few miles over the speed limit, your penalty usually won't be as severe as a driver exceeding the limit by 30 miles per hour. Also, if you've received multiple speedings tickets, your cost may be higher than someone with an otherwise clean driving record.

And, if you fail to pay the citation by the due date, you'll be looking at additional penalties.

Keep in mind, though, that the cost of receiving traffic tickets doesn't end after you've paid the fine. That's because your insurance rates could go up, meaning you'll be paying for your mistake with each premium payment. And, if you had plenty of points on your driving record, your speeding ticket could cause your license to be suspended. Then, you could be facing license reinstatement fees - not to mention the loss of driving privileges.

You could appeal your ticket in court. Even if you're found guilty, your traffic fine might be reduced. But, still, that's far from a sure bet.

Your cheapest option? Obey the speed limits at all times, and avoid having to deal with speeding tickets.
