In Illinois you must be 18 years old to apply for an intrastate CDL. This means you can only travel within the state. To travel across state lines and/or own a commercial license with a HAZMAT endorsement, you must be 21.

Obtaining a CDL Permit

But before you can apply for an Illinois CDL, you must first obtain a permit by passing a CDL test (basically a general knowledge exam).

You'll need to get the IL CDL manual to study. All of the questions on the test are based on information found in the manual, including inspections, space management, and backing. You'll even learn about each CDL class, which might help you decide what kind of CDL driver you want to be.

You can obtain a copy, for free, from any Secretary of State (SOS) office, or by downloading one from the SOS's website. When you think you've had enough CDL practice and are test-ready, take a CDL practice test. These can be found online from a long list of sites, allowing you to take as many practice tests as necessary.
