Renewing Your IL CDL

To retain your status as an Illinois CDL driver, you must renew your commercial license in a timely manner. As a reminder, the Secretary of State (SOS) will send you a license renewal notice.

You must renew in person at any IL SOS office. When you arrive, here's what you need and what you can expect:

  • You must pass a vision test. You can do this at the SOS office, or arrive with a Vision Specialist Report, completed by an eye specialist. The Vision Specialist Report can be downloaded from the SOS website.
  • You might need to get some CDL practice, because you will need to take the CDL test (knowledge) every other time you renew. A clean driving record will waive the exam, but if you need to take the test and need to refresh your brain, take a CDL practice test. If you can, find one geared toward your CDL class.
  • Have your commercial license. If you can't produce your CDL, bring other acceptable forms of identification. These must be original forms. No photocopies.
  • Have your Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card.
  • Have cash or a check to pay the $60 license renewal fee.
