Motorcycles and License Plates

To obtain a motorcycle license plate you must register your motorcycle with PennDOT.

To start, grab an Application for Certificate of Title (Form MV-1). You can't download this form; you must pick one up from any PA Driver License Center. After completing, return to a Driver License Center with:

  • Form MV-1.
  • The title.
  • Proof of Pennsylvania insurance.
  • Identification.
  • Tracing or verification of your motorcycle's vehicle identification number (VIN). You can't do this; you must have it verified either an inspection mechanic or a dealership rotary.
  • A check or money order made payable to the "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania" for $18.

If you order a standard license plate, you'll receive it immediately. If you order a personalized or a vanity plate, it will arrive in your mail in about 8-10 weeks. Personalized motorcycle license plates are limited to five characters, with any combination of numbers with letters.
