How do I apply for a CDL in Massachusetts? Massachusetts
MA CDL Procedure
Do you have a MA CDL driver permit? If not, you'll need to obtain that first. If you have a CDL permit, in order to obtain your commercial license, you'll need to:
- Take a few CDL practice tests.
- Make an appointment.
- Bring your paperwork.
- Take the real CDL tests.
CDL Practice Test
While at this stage of the CDL application process, you don't need to take any written tests, you may need to do so later to obtain or keep an endorsement. If so, taking a few CDL practice tests can sharpen your knowledge and make it easier to pass the official CDL test (see below) on your first attempt. Before taking a practice test, though, study your CDL handbook.
Make an Appointment
You're going to have to pass a series of operational tests. When you feel confident enough to so, make an appointment for the CDL tests by calling the RMV at (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926. Appointments must be made by phone.
Bring Your Paperwork
After you're secured your appointment, bring to the road test location:
- A completed CDL application.
- Your valid Massachusetts CDL permit.
- Your current driver's license (if you have one).
- Your current vehicle registration.
- A medical certificate or medical waiver.
- A qualified sponsor (with current CDL and endorsements for the vehicle class).
- A properly equipped vehicle.
- Proof of insurance.
Are you renting the vehicle? If so, you must show the rental agreement, and provide written permission from the rental company (on its letterhead) to use their vehicle for road testing.
Take the Tests
This consists of three tasks:
- Pre-trip vehicle inspection
- Basic vehicle control
- Road test
