Requirements for Vintage, Antique, Historic, and Classic Cars

Depending on your state, collector license plates may instead be referred to as antique license plates or vintage license plates. You will need to check with your state's DMV for an exact definition on what classifies as a collector car, a classic car, or even an antique car.

In Wisconsin, for example, only vehicles 20 years or older and that have not been altered or modified can qualify for these kinds of specialty plates. In Washington, only vehicles 30 years or older qualify. And in Alaska, you can only order a custom plate for a collector car that possesses a body and frame manufactured before 1949, features hydraulic service brakes on each wheel, and has standard or blue dot taillights.

But the requirements don't stop there. Many states will limit the travel of a classic car or an antique car to exhibitions, parades or car club meetings. And in Wisconsin you can't operate a collector vehicle during January unless it's equipped with a temporary five-day license plate.

To help unravel your state's collector license plate qualifications and requirements, contact your DMV.
