Ordering Firefighter Specialty Plates

There are different requirements for different states. So you'll need to contact your local DMV to learn what forms to fill and what documents to provide for ordering a custom plate.

But, in general, here's what you need to do:

  1. Contact your local DMV office about obtaining a firefighter license plate application. If you're lucky, you'll be able to download it from the DMV's website. Otherwise you'll need to pick it up in person.  You will probably be required to provide proof of your firefighter status. This, depending on your state, may entail a letter of proof from your fire department, or having the application certified by your fire chief.
  2. Submit the application along with any required documents and a license plate fee to the DMV.

Bear in mind that if you retire from firefighting duties, you will be required to surrender your firefighter license plates. Depending on your state, there may be exceptions to this mandate for certain firefighters. Retiring due to an injury suffered while fighting a six-alarm fire, for example, would be an exception.
