Do I need to notify the DMV if I am involved in a fender bender?
Fender Bender or Car Crash?
The answer to this question depends on your state and the extent of your car accident.
For a simple fender bender, you only need to exchange contact and auto insurance information with the other involved party and alert your car insurance company. You don't have to contact the police or file an accident report.
If, however, injuries are involved - for example, rather than a fender getting tapped and actual car crash took place - you must contact the police. This also applies to extensive auto or property damage. The amounts vary by state. In North Carolina, for example, you must notify the police if damage exceeds $1,000, while in Idaho you only call the police if the damage amount tops $1,500. And in California you're required to submit a Report of Traffic Accident Occurring in California (Form SR 1) to the DMV if damages top $750. Failure to submit this form could lead to driving privileges getting suspended.
If there's any doubt on your behalf regarding notification following an accident, contact your local DMV.
