Appointment Written Test

Appointments are recommended but not required for the written CDL test, which you take the same day you bring in your paperwork to get a commercial license. You will get faster service if you do make an appointment on the CA DMV website or by phone.

Remember to practice for the written test first by taking a CDL practice test. These written tests are available for sale from various drivers ed companies for around $10. The CA DMV commercial handbook also has a few short questions as samples.

Appointment Road Test

You do need to make an appointment for the commercial driving test. These skills tests are given only at commercial driving offices - not every California DMV office.

At your CDL driving test:

  • You must bring the vehicle you’ll test in. It must be the same CDL class of vehicle you have a CDL for.
  • You and the DMV examiner will do a safety check pre-trip inspection.
  • You will drive the examiner around and be tested on your driving skills.

CDL practice is important before this test, too; not being entirely up to par with your driving skills won't do anything to help you pass. Gain some practice with a skilled CDL driver of the class you're aiming for.

Alternately, you can present a Certificate of Driving Skill (DL 170) from your trucking school or employer. Then you do not have to take the driving skills test. Not every employer is authorized to provide this, though.
