Commercial License and Renew License Fees

  • $39: For someone without a CA license.
  • $34: For someone with a current California drivers license who wants a CDL.
  • $39: For renewals.
  • $30: For retests of the driving or skills tests.

Remember that a commercial license is good for five years before you need to renew your CDL. License renewal should take place well ahead of time, because it’s likely you’ll have to retake tests or get re-certified in some way.

Preparing for the CDL Test

The written test consists of traffic laws and signs for both a regular CDL and whichever endorsements you want to get, such as a school bus driver endorsement. This means you need to:

  • Study the Commercial Drivers Handbook.
  • Take a CDL practice test.

Keep in mind, the California DMV provides CDL practice test on their website. For additional tests, it might be a good idea to pay $10 or $15 for a longer CDL practice exam from a drivers ed website. At this price, it’s cheaper to pay a little bit for preparation, than to pay another fee of $30 for a retake.

It's best to prepare for the driving test by getting plenty of CDL practice with another CDL driver of the same CDL class you have. You can do this through a driving school, on the job, or with another CDL driver that you happen to know. Once you have mastered all the skills for your particular vehicle, schedule a road test CDL appointment at a CDL CA DMV office.
