What are the requirements for submitting a CDL medical exam report to the CA DMV? California
Medical Exam Requirements
Before you can become a California CDL driver, you have to be certified medically fit by a medical exam. Your doctor, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner must sign the medical form. Take the form to the CA DMV when you apply for a CDL.
The medical conditions that may prohibit you from driving a commercial vehicle include anything that could impair your ability to drive safely, such as:
- Mental disorders that might prevent you from driving safely.
- Vision of less than 20/40 with corrective lenses.
- Diabetes.
- Seizure history.
- Unconsciousness disorders.
- Impaired hearing.
- Impairments of the hands that prevent you from grasping.
- Alcoholism (as diagnosed by the doctor).
CDL Practice
Once you’re medically cleared, you can make an appointment at a DMV office to complete your CDL paperwork. Here you’ll have to take a written CDL test. A skills test may be scheduled separately.
Practice for this long written test by:- Studying the commercial handbook.
- Taking a CDL practice test.
- Purchasing a longer-form test for $10 or $15, in addition to the short one the DMV provides.
This will let you see if you’ll do well on the real test. If you fail, you will get two more tries, but retests are $30.
