What are the different California commercial licenses by CDL Class? California
Commercial License Classes in California
Know which CDL class of license you need to have before applying for a CDL.
Class A
This is the most comprehensive license.
You may drive all combinations of Class B and C vehicles.
Plus, you are allowed to tow:
- Any vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000 or more pounds.
- Any trailer bus as well as more than one vehicle (both with proper endorsement).
- All Class B and C vehicles.
Class B
With this, you can drive:
- A vehicle with a GVWR of more than 26,000 lbs.
- A 3-axle vehicle weighing over 6,000 lbs.
- Any farm vehicle, with endorsement.
- A bus (except a trailer bus), with endorsement.
- All Class C vehicles.
And you may tow:
- One vehicle at a time with a GVWR of 10,000 or less pounds.
- Any type of vehicle a Class C driver is allowed to tow.
Class C
A Class C vehicle carries hazardous materials. For example, if you are a medical waste driver who will drive a small van with a hazmat placard on it, you will need to get a Commercial Class C license.
In contrast, noncommercial class C is the type of license regular car and truck drivers get. This license allows you to drive:
- 2-axle vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. or fewer.
- 3-axle vehicles weighing 6,000 lbs. gross or fewer.
- Housecar (such as a motorhome) 40 feet long or fewer.
- A motorized scooter.
Prepare for Your CDL Test
After you apply for a commercial license in the appropriate class at the CA DMV, you’ll have to take some written tests. These knowledge tests are based on traffic laws and safety pertaining to the class of license you’re getting. If you’re adding endorsements, such as a permit to drive a school bus, you’ll take a test for this, too.
It's best to get some CDL education. Study the Commercial Handbook; the DMV advises you to read the regular drivers handbook as well. This will take up to a week for most people.
Taking a CDL practice test is one of the best ways to prepare. Then try the CDL practice the DMV has on its website. In addition, purchase a practice test. That way, you know you will pass the exam on the first try.
Then, once you've practiced with an experienced CDL driver, make an appointment to take the road test. The driving test is offered only at commercial CDL offices, not regular offices. You must bring in your vehicle with you.
The road test tests you for:
- Your safety skills.
- Your driving knowledge and finesse.
