Test-taking anxiety gets the best of us sometimes; however, it's not the end of the world if you don't pass the test to receive your Texas commercial drivers license on the first try.

CDL Written Test

The commercial driver manual published by the Texas Department of Safety (DPS) contains several CDL practice test questions and a study guide to help you get ready for the written test.

A CDL driver who answers fewer than 80 percent of the questions correctly on the TX CDL written exam can ask that his or her application be kept on file for 90 days. The test can be retaken at any time during this point without paying additional fees and no appointment will be needed for retesting. If you fail to pass the CDL test within 90 days, however, you'll need to begin the process to obtain your commercial license over again.

CDL Road Test

Unlike the written exam, the CDL road test is not offered at all locations. If you want to take the driving test, you will need to call the location you wish to visit in order to confirm that they have a staff member available to administer the road test.

The CDL road test is graded on a pass or fail basis and must be taken in a vehicle that is the same CDL class as the license you wish to receive. Some of the things that can make you automatically fail the test include causing a traffic accident or breaking a law during the test.

If you fail the test, you can retake it as soon as you get some more CDL practice and feel comfortable. However, you are advised to spend some time practicing your driving technique in order to avoid making the same mistakes on a subsequent test attempt.
