A Texas commercial drivers license costs $60 and is valid for six years. If you are a currently licensed Texas driver, you may request a $4 credit for each year remaining on your license.

CDL Endorsement Fees

Contrary to popular belief, a TX CDL, no matter what CDL class it is, doesn't give you the authority to operate any vehicle. Additional endorsements are necessary for many types of driving jobs. Possible endorsements for the CDL driver include:

  • T: Double and triple trailer
  • P: Passenger
  • N: Tank vehicle
  • H: Hazardous materials
  • X: Combination of N and H
  • S: School bus

There is a $10 charge to add each endorsement to your commercial license and CDL practice test questions for each endorsement class are available in the state's commercial driver manual. It's wise to study this manual and take a CDL practice exam or two before you take a CDL test for any endorsement.

If you wish to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement, you'll also be charged for fingerprinting and a background check. Fees for these services vary; call your Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office for details or with questions about test appointment procedures and acceptable payment methods for commercial license fees.

Renew License Fees

The fee to renew a TX CDL is the same as the fee to receive your first commercial license. You will receive a license renewal notice in the mail shortly before your license is set to expire. No road test or driving test will be required for license renewal, except in the case of a hazardous materials endorsement.
