Replacing a Lost CDL in Texas

You must have your Texas CDL with you whenever you are driving a commercial motor vehicle. Therefore, if your license is ever lost or damaged, it will need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, a CDL driver cannot obtain a replacement commercial license online or by mail. You can request a replacement CDL by visiting the nearest Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) drivers license office. No appointment or CDL test is necessary to replace a lost license, but you will need to bring proof of your identity and Social Security number.

There is a $10 fee for a duplicate license and you are advised to keep in mind that a duplicate commercial license will still have the same expiration date as your original CDL and be in the same CDL class.

Identity Theft Precautions

Because it the most commonly accepted form of identification, a lost drivers license puts you at an increased risk of identity theft. If you have reason to believe your TX CDL has been stolen, you are advised to file a police report detailing the circumstances of the theft and bring this report with you to the drivers license when you request a replacement CDL.

You will also want to pay close attention to your credit reports in the months that follow the license theft, since suspicious activity could indicate even more problems.
