CDL Driver Classifications

Actually, when you refer to a CDL class, you're talking about federal standards for a commercial license, not Florida classifications. However, here's how the classes are divided:

  • Class A: Required to drive trucks or truck combinations weighing over 26,000 pounds and towing a vehicle or unit weighing over 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B: Required to drive straight trucks and buses weighing over 26,000 pounds.
  • Class C: Required to drive vehicles designed to transport more than 15 persons (including the driver) and having a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 26,001 pounds; also needed to drive vehicles transporting placarded amounts of hazardous materials

Take a CDL Practice Test?

You'll need to pass a written test to gain your CDL. Taking a few CDL practice tests is a smart way to prepare for this challenge. These practice tests provide an excellent means of showing how ready you are for the official CDL test and indicating where you might need to devote additional studying time.

Appointments

Appointments aren't required for your written CDL test, but the FL DHSMV does recommend them.

However, you'll have to obtain an appointment for your driving test or road test. You can set your appointment through OASIS, which is located on the DHSMV site.
