Georgia Commercial License Classes

There are three CDL classes issued by the GA Department of Driver Services (DDS). You will need one of these commercial licenses if your vehicle or combination of vehicles has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds.

  • CDL Class A: This class covers vehicles or combinations of vehicles towing more than 10,000 pounds GVWR.
  • CDL Class B: This class covers single vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds GVWR.
  • CDL Class C: This class covers vehicles transporting more than 15 passengers, including the driver. It also covers vehicles transporting hazardous materials and toxins.

Applying for Georgia CDL

To obtain your GA commercial license, you will need to complete some applications and paperwork, pay a $35 application fee, and pass several tests.

To prepare for your CDL test, it's a good idea to pursue some CDL education, like an online CDL practice test, a CDL class, and formal driver training for the road test. To become a CDL driver, you will need to pass the knowledge test before you can schedule an appointment for your driving test. CDL practice is available throughout the state at approved truck driving schools and academies.

Check the GA DDS website for appropriate links and for the applications necessary to begin the CDL process.
