Appointments for NY CDL Tests

No matter the CDL class, to obtain a New York commercial license each CDL driver applicant needs to pass, at the minimum, two tests: knowledge and skills.

CDL Knowledge Test

No appointment is necessary. Visit any New York DMV office to take the exam. You should arrive at least three hours before the office's closing time.

Before taking this CDL test, be sure to prepare by studying the state's CDL manual. You can obtain a copy from any NY DMV office, free of charge, or by downloading from the DMV's website. Also, take a CDL practice test. You can find CDL practice exams online and they and feature questions similar to those you'll see on the actual test.

CDL Skills Test

You must make an appointment road test; but before you can set a test date, you must first pay a $40 fee. You can pay online, by calling (518) 402-2100, or in person at any DMV office. If you pay in person, you'll receive a receipt. You'll need the receipt number when you make a test appointment online or by calling (518) 402 -2100.

It generally takes several weeks from the date you make the appointment to the date of the test, so plan accordingly.

If you need to cancel your driving test, you must notify the DMV at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled test date. Failure to do so will result in the forfeit of your $40 test fee.
