NY CDL and License Renewal Fees

Okay, here's what you'll need to pay to renew your CDL:

Renew License Fees

As you can see, the renewal fee a CDL driver pays depends on his or her CDL class:

  • Class A, B and C: $164.50
  • Class A, B and C with Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD): $180.50
  • Class E: $112.50
  • Class E with MCTD: $128.50
The MCTD fee only applies to residents of the following counties: Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester.

Hazmat CDL Renewal Fees

  • Written Test: $5
  • Background Check: $140.75
If you fail to renew your commercial license in a timely manner, you may be required to start from square one, as it were, and retake both the knowledge test and the driving test.

Grab a CDL manual to study for the knowledge test. All of the questions on the CDL test are based on information found in the manual. After studying the manual, you'll next want to take a CDL practice test. You can find CDL practice exams online. When you're ready to take the knowledge test, visit any DMV office. No appointment is necessary.

After passing the knowledge exam, you'll next need to make an appointment for a road test; but before you can make an appointment, you must first pay a $40 test fee. You can do this online, in person, or by calling (518) 402-2100.
