NC Commercial License and Renew License Fees

To apply for or renew a North Carolina commercial license, you must pay the following fee or fees:

  • Application: $30
  • CDL Class A, B, or C: $15
  • Endorsements: $3
  • Duplicate CDL: $10
  • Learner Permit: $15
  • Duplicate Permit: $10

The length of the CDL depends on the driver's age. A CDL driver between 18 and 53 will receive a CDL valid for eight years, and one who is 54 or older will receive a commercial license good for five years.

In most cases, when it comes time for license renewal only CDL operators with school bus and HAZMAT endorsements must retest. Most others will not be required to retake the knowledge or road exam.

Preparing for the CDL Test and Road Test

If you're applying for the first time, you must first pass a written test. All of the questions are based on information addressed in the North Carolina CDL manual. You can grab a free copy from any NC DMV office or download one from the DMV's website.

After studying the manual, hold off on taking the actual exam until taking at least one CDL practice test. All of the questions mirror those found on the real test. CDL practice exams are great study tools and, best of all, you can take as many as you deem necessary.

The manual also explains what to expect during the driving test, which consists of three steps:

  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Basic control
  • Road test

You must make an appointment for the driving test, and you can do so through the DMV or a state-approved third party test site.
