Preparing for the NC CDL Test
To apply for a commercial license, regardless of CDL class, you'll first need to obtain a CDL permit. This requires passing a general knowledge written test. All of the questions are based on information contained in the NC CDL manual. To obtain a manual to study, visit any DMV location or download one from the DMV's website. There is no charge. After studying the manual, you'll want to take a CDL practice test. You can find these practice exams from a huge number of websites. The practice tests feature questions similar to those found on the actual exam, giving you a good idea whether you're ready or not.
After obtaining your permit, you'll next need to pass a driving test. This test is by appointment only, and consists of three sections: the pre trip inspection, basic driving skills, and a road test. The CDL manual provides information on what to expect. Though not required, it's always a good idea to enroll in a training course for extra CDL practice.
