You can replace your North Carolina (NC) commercial driver license (CDL) if you lose or damage the CDL driver license card. Items that you need to replace your license are:

  • Valid NC driver license number.
  • Social Security Number (you can also use a VISA or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).
  • Date of birth.
  • CDL class for your license.

Applying for a Duplicate North Carolina Commercial Driver License

Visit a NC Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office or complete the request for a duplicate CDL class driver card online at the DMV website. Create a PIN number to access the online system, then:

  1. Verify that your name and street mailing address are correct in the online system.
  2. Check off that you want to receive a duplicate CDL.
  3. Pay the $10 duplicate license fee (you will need a Master Card or Visa to make the payment online).
It takes about 10 business days to receive the duplicate license in the mail at your home address. Print the receipt so that you will have confirmation that you submitted the duplicate license request.

If you complete the duplicate CDL application in person at a DMV office, you will receive a temporary commercial license. You can also contact the NC DMV at 919-715-7000 should you have further questions about your license, including CDL test required to renew your license.

You do not have to make an appointment to receive the duplicate commercial license. You also do not have to retake the CDL test in order to replace the lost license.
