NJ CDL and License Renewal Fees

You can expect to pay the following New Jersey commercial license fees:

  • CDL permit (covers knowledge, skills and endorsement tests): $125
  • Four-year CDL (to receive or renew license): $42
  • Endorsement: $2
  • NJ passenger license (required to obtain a CDL): $24
  • HAZMAT background check: $89.25
The NJ MVC accepts cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards (Visa, American Express, and MasterCard).

Obtain CDL Practice

To obtain any CDL class you must first pass the knowledge exam part of the CDL test. This is required for any potential CDL driver. All of the questions are based on information found in the New Jersey CDL manual. You can obtain a copy, for no fee, from any MVC office, or by downloading from the MVC's website.

In between studying the manual and taking the actual exam, you should take at least one CDL practice test. You can find these online from a long list of independent websites. They're even helpful if you've already passed your knowledge exam and are gearing up for your driving test.

NOTE: No appointment is needed for the knowledge test, but you will need to make an appointment for the road test.
