New Jersey Commercial License Classes

Before applying for a NJ commercial license decide on your CDL class:

  • Class A: Applies to a truck or trailer with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GCWR of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. This CDL also allows you to operate commercial vehicles in Class B and Class C, provided, of course, you have the proper endorsement. You must be 18 to apply.
  • Class B: Applies to any vehicle with a GVWR of 26,0001 or more pounds, or a vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds towing a trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less. This class includes buses with a carrying capacity of 16 or more passengers, including the driver. You must be 18 to apply.
  • Class C: Applies to any vehicle with GVWR of fewer than 26,0001 pounds and used for carrying hazardous materials (HAZMAT). This also includes any bus designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and with a GVWR of fewer than 26,001 pounds and all school buses designed for 15 or fewer passengers, including the driver. You must be at least 21 years old to apply for this CDL class.

Applying for Commercial License

Before you can apply for a NJ CDL you must meet the minimum requirements:

  • Be at least 18 for a Class A or B, and at least 21 for a Class C.
  • Own a Class D New Jersey license.
  • Possess 20/40 vision in each eye.
  • Be able to distinguish red, green, and amber colors.
  • Be able to pass a medical physical, as dictated by federal regulations.
To earn a CDL, each CDL driver applicant must pass two parts of a CDL test: the knowledge test and the driving test. Studying the NJ CDL manual is the best way to prepare. You can obtain a copy, for free, from any MVC location. You should also take a CDL practice test. These CDL practice exams are available online and mirror the actual exams.

No appointment is needed for the knowledge test, but you must make one with the MVC for the road test exam.
