Passing the Illinois CDL Test

There is no limit to the number of times you can take either CDL test, so don't despair. Failing the road test or general knowledge test for your CDL class will not put an end to your CDL driver dream; it will only delay it.

CDL Knowledge Test

If you fail the test:

  • Three times, you'll need to wait 30 days before trying again.
  • Six times, you'll face a waiting period of 90 days.
  • Nine times, you'll have to wait one full year before giving it another try.

NOTE: After each third attempt, you will need to pay another $50 permit fee.

CDL Driving Test

The same waiting period applies to the road test as well. The lone difference is that after you fail the road test for the sixth time you'll be required to file a medical report, completed by a licensed physician, indicating that you are mentally and physically fit to safely drive a vehicle.

Studying for the CDL Test

Studying the Illinois CDL manual is the best way to pass the knowledge test. All topics covered on the test are included in the manual. Visit any IL Secretary of State (SOS) office to obtain a free manual, or you can download one from the SOS's website.

You should also take a CDL practice test. These CDL practice exams replicate the actual exam, giving you a good idea on what to expect.

And to best prepare for your appointment road test try to get as much driving experience as possible. Consider enrolling in a driver training school. These training programs are geared towards helping you obtain a commercial license.
