Applying for a CDL Permit

Each CDL driver must apply or renew all license transactions with the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS).

To obtain a CDL you must first pass a general knowledge CDL test and earn a commercial license permit. Studying the Illinois CDL manual is the best way to prepare for the test. All of the exam questions are based on topics covered in the manual. If you need a copy, visit any SOS office or download one from the SOS's website. There is no fee for this manual.

After studying, be sure to take a CDL practice test. These CDL practice exams mimic the actual exams, featuring multiple-choice questions on all general knowledge CDL topics including, use of high beams, stopping distances and space management.

Applying for a CDL

After obtaining your permit, you'll need to pass a driving test. This consists of three parts: the pre trip inspection, driving skills, and a road test. You must make an appointment.

When you call, be sure to get details about the test vehicle. For example, you might be responsible for providing a commercial vehicle appropriate for the CDL class you're trying for.
