Illinois CDL Driver Classes

The type of commercial license you pursue is contingent on the type of commercial vehicle you intend to drive. Each CDL class is defined as such:

  • Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another is not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Class C: A single vehicle with a GVWR of at least 16,001 pounds but fewer than 26,001 pounds.

Passing the IL CDL Test

Requirements may vary depending on CDL class and/or endorsement. A HAZMAT endorsement, for example, requires not only passing a written test, but also a federal background check.

For assistance, consult the Illinois CDL manual. It explains every different CDL class and provides all of the information you will need to know about the written exam and the road test, including test site locations and how to make a driving test appointment.

The manual also towers as your number one study source, regardless of CDL class. You can obtain a manual, for free, from any Secretary of State office. In addition, you should always take at least one CDL practice test. These CDL practice exams mirror the actual exam, giving a good sense on what to expect.
