Replacing an Illinois CDL

If you lose your commercial license, no problem; Illinois makes it easy to replace a CDL. You must visit any Secretary of State (SOS) office with:

  • Two valid forms of identification. No photocopies; you must bring original documents. Try to bring your Social Security card and any document that proves your date of birth, IL residence, and proof of signature
  • Cash or a check to pay the $5 replacement fee. Some offices may accept credit cards. Drivers older than 60 who present a police report indicating their license was stolen will have the $5 fee waived.

No CDL test or appointment is necessary for receiving a replacement.

Apply for a duplicate CDL as soon as possible. It is illegal to operate a vehicle without a license. If you get stopped the police will show no sympathy for a CDL driver with a lost or stolen license.

TIP: Though not mandatory, reporting a lost license to the police is recommended. Be prepared to provide information such as your CDL class.
